project ‘Constraints and Tradition’
Two PhD Candidates
Project 1 : This project investigates the changes in the way in which the emperor was lauded in panegyrics and mirrors for princes. These texts praised imperial behaviour and also contained advice on proper behaviour. This PhD project examines which rulers and what kind of acts were presented as exemplary and traditional, and whether these examples changed over the course of time.
Project 2 : This project investigates the ways in which local monuments (historical reliefs and local statue groups) emphasised traditions. In this context the project also considers geographical developments and diversity. By examining where and when local monuments emphasised either tradition or innovation, local ‘shared experiences’ may be identified.

UiT The Arctic University of Norway
Department of Archaeology and Social Anthropology
project “Unruly Heritage: An Archaeology of the Anthropocene”
Two PhD Candidates in Contemporary Archaeology
The dissertation topics must relate to the project’s two main case studies, sea-borne marine/coastal debris and modern ruin landscapes. The first focuses on how the growing problem of marine debris, by drifting, assembling and surviving irrespective of human plans and preferences, makes conspicuous the unruly afterlife of things. Taking seriously how this hybrid legacy impugns the values, order, and divides upon which much heritage rests (e.g. nature/culture), the aim is to develop alternative and more ecologically adept heritage understandings, rethinking notions of e.g. management, stewardship and conservation. The second case study focuses on abandonment and ruination of Soviet-time towns and settlements on the Russian Kola Peninsula (with the possibility of comparative cases from other marginal areas of the North Atlantic region). It explores the consequences of living with a persistent Soviet legacy; how it challenges notions of memory and time, and how the viscosity of this material past complicates traditional notions related to historical succession and chronology

They will carry out a series of ‘resilience characterisation’ cores and field ecological and hydrological measurements; collate environmental and archaeological evidence using a Geographic Information System; and interview community members about peat cutting and attitudes to resilience, extraction and the landscape.
