University of Oslo
Centre for the Earth Evolution and Dynamics (CEED)
PhD Research Fellowship in Earth Crises
Large-scale archaeological excavations of Southern Scandinavia indicate considerable cultural, material and societal change during the transition from the Migration Period to the Late Iron Age (CE 500-600) across Europe and Scandinavia. Of special interest is the possible link between climate deterioration, vast crop failure, and the onset of plague, all of which gave rise to extensive changes in land use and settlement patterns. This project is to reconstruct both seasonal temperature and seasonal precipitation regimes based on tree rings covering the time period. Wood specimens will be prepared for stable isotope measurement using intra-annual high-resolution sampling techniques, and carbon and oxygen isotope analyses will be performed on the resulting materials. Changes in seasonal precipitation and temperature will be calculated using previously published models in order to formulate a new vision of the effects of climate upon society during the development of earliest Viking culture.

PhD Scholarship Pre- and Proto-History
in the area of zooarchaeology in pre- and protohistoric contexts. For the Groningen Institute of Archaeology, we welcome research proposals that devise a new zooarchaeological methodology focusing on at least one early domesticate, and apply it to case studies relating to the emergence and nature of farming in the margins of Neolithisation. Regions of primary interest are western Turkey and the Netherlands, but proposals that capture commonalities between these and other understudied geographic areas of primary and secondary Neolithisation are also welcome. Zooarchaeological method/s to be developed should have wide re-use potential for other archaeological periods and regions.

project ‘Constraints and Tradition’
Two PhD Candidates
Project 1 : This project investigates the changes in the way in which the emperor was lauded in panegyrics and mirrors for princes. These texts praised imperial behaviour and also contained advice on proper behaviour. This PhD project examines which rulers and what kind of acts were presented as exemplary and traditional, and whether these examples changed over the course of time.
Project 2 : This project investigates the ways in which local monuments (historical reliefs and local statue groups) emphasised traditions. In this context the project also considers geographical developments and diversity. By examining where and when local monuments emphasised either tradition or innovation, local ‘shared experiences’ may be identified.

UiT The Arctic University of Norway
Department of Archaeology and Social Anthropology
project “Unruly Heritage: An Archaeology of the Anthropocene”
Two PhD Candidates in Contemporary Archaeology
The dissertation topics must relate to the project’s two main case studies, sea-borne marine/coastal debris and modern ruin landscapes. The first focuses on how the growing problem of marine debris, by drifting, assembling and surviving irrespective of human plans and preferences, makes conspicuous the unruly afterlife of things. Taking seriously how this hybrid legacy impugns the values, order, and divides upon which much heritage rests (e.g. nature/culture), the aim is to develop alternative and more ecologically adept heritage understandings, rethinking notions of e.g. management, stewardship and conservation. The second case study focuses on abandonment and ruination of Soviet-time towns and settlements on the Russian Kola Peninsula (with the possibility of comparative cases from other marginal areas of the North Atlantic region). It explores the consequences of living with a persistent Soviet legacy; how it challenges notions of memory and time, and how the viscosity of this material past complicates traditional notions related to historical succession and chronology

“Peatland and Community Resilience: How resilient are peatlands to significant disturbance through peat cutting by humans? And how does the degradation of peatlands impact the resilience of local human communities?”
This project will address these problems by integrating approaches from the environmental sciences and the humanities. They will carry out a series of ‘resilience characterisation’ cores and field ecological and hydrological measurements; collate environmental and archaeological evidence using a Geographic Information System; and interview community members about peat cutting and attitudes to resilience, extraction and the landscape.
