project “Transformations in early Greek Societies and Landscapes”
Research Assistant
One of the key questions to be answered by the project is the relationship between the climate and the historical record in Greece with a spatial focus on the Northern Peloponnese. The aim is to gain sediment records of the last 4000 years with a temporal focus on the transitional period between Late Bronze Age and Early Iron Age (1200-800 BP). The position aims to connect climate variability and archaeological record as documented in lacustrine sediment cores from several karst valleys in the Northern Peloponnese and from Lake Trichonida. The PhD candidate will establish time series of climate variables based on detailed 14C dating and different geochemical analyses (e.g. XRF).

Max Planck Institute for the Science of Human History in Jena, Germany & Initiative for the Science of the Human Past at Harvard University
Max Planck Harvard project
Three 5-year Full Fellowships in Biological Archaeology/Archaeometry and Archaeogenetics
In order to study human mobility and intercultural encounter and the associated exchange of genes, objects, practices and ideas, funded PhD projects should focus on the early history and/or archaeology of the Mediterranean. Max Planck Harvard Project activities will focus on three distinct historical topics, i.e., 1) the early historical globalization of the Eastern Mediterranean in the Late Bronze and Early Iron Age (ca. 1600-1000 BCE), 2) the so-called “Phoenician” and “Greek” migrations in the early 1st millennium BCE throughout the Mediterranean and 3) the link between human mobility and the spread of pandemics in Antiquity.
PhD projects should cover two or more of the following aspects:
1) study of relevant burials of human individuals of the respective time-frame in the Eastern and Central Mediterranean from an archaeological point of view (including contextual analyses of associated objects, the context of the burial – e.g. within a settlement or necropolis etc.) and identify relevant material for scientific analysis.
2) analysis of relevant environmental data (e.g. pollen profiles, speleothems near the relevant settlements; the new Harvard-Maine historical ice core).
3) genetic analyses and isotope ratio analyses (Sr, O) in order to trace individual mobility and genetic homogeneity within mobile groups and local societies.
4) genetic and pathologic/anthropologic analyses on the human remains especially from mass burials in order to identify the reason for the death of the individuals.
5) exhaustive and rigorous identification and computationally-assisted philological analysis of the previously identified written sources and the even more important set of newly identified written sources that document antiquity’s great pandemics.
6) correlation of the results of the scientific analyses with the archaeological analyses and with historical data from literary sources along with the environmental data where relevant.
7) relations between different kinds and degrees of mobility at a particular settlement and local societal transformations, e.g. changes in material culture, architecture, consumption practices etc.

“Fire and shelter: absence of evidence or evidence of absence?”
This project will adopt an experimental taphonomic approach to evaluate the visibility of these cultural insulation features: constructing, using and destroying Lower Palaeolithic-type fires and shelters, and recording the resulting traces, in a series of different, dynamic settings comparable to those which dominate the Lower Palaeolithic archaeological record (e.g. floodplains, lake shores, woodlands).

We are interested in projects that take their point of departure in funerary portraiture from Palmyra, in particular within the fields that until now have not been covered by project members; in ancient portraiture and identity studies. In particular, we are interested in proposals that address questions such as: Palmyrene portraiture in context–both locally and within the graves themselves; Contextualisation of Palmyrene portraiture within the broader regional setting of the Roman Near East; Specific aspects, such as representations of Palmyrene men in the funerary portraiture or family constellations.

This PhD will involve the mapping and characterisation of the landscape of Doggerland. You will investigate the process of interpreting seismic geophysics of the North Sea bed and enabling it to be used as part of a series of computer simulations that will explore its floral, faunal and human inhabitants. You will have experience of either geophysics or large-scale mapping, ideally both. You will also have an archaeology qualification, ideally with some emphasis on prehistory.
PhD #3 – Computer simulation (linked to ERC-funded Europe’s Lost Frontiers project)
This PhD will involve using seismic, environmental and sedimentary DNA data within computer simulations of the landscape of Doggerland. This will focus on the natural resources available to hunter-gatherer communities and the processes involved with the Mesolithic-Neolithic transition. You will have some experience of computer programming and either archaeology or anthropology.

“Rethinking Early Modern Media”
PhD position History of Art & Architecture
This project asks how we might understand early modern images and material artifacts differently if we decouple them from traditional media-specific narratives. It proposes to reconsider in historical terms how the meaning and function of various early modern media (e.g. prints, oil paintings, watercolors, frescoes, sculpture, furniture, altarpieces, textiles, metalwork, ceramics, stained glass, architecture, waterworks, gardens, paper cut-outs, ephemera) were linked to their form and aesthetic properties. Furthermore, it seeks to develop a more concrete understanding of the relationship between media and their materials.

project “Technique in the Arts: Practices, Concepts, Expertise (1500-1950)”
PhD Candidate History of Art, Science and Technology
for the sub-project “The Science of Technique, 1750-1950”. The focus of this sub-project is on the development of a science-based conservation practice and the establishment of museum laboratories in the nineteenth and first half of the twentieth centuries. Two lines of research on the science of ‘technique’ are developed: (1) the adoption of new imaging techniques (e.g. X-rays) and the development of associated new observational skills, and (2) chemistry and material science. The central concern of this project is to understand if and how science and technology changed art history and practices of conservation and restoration as well as to understand the constitution of expertise (with attention to conflicts of expertise between science and humanities).

“Functional Morphology of Giant Fossil Dormice”
in zoology, anatomy, palaeontology or zooarchaeology. This project seeks to understand the effects of gigantism on the morphology and function of Leithia. Are the giant fossil dormice of Malta and Sicily simply scaled-up versions of their mainland relatives or has allometric shape change occurred as body size has increased?

University of Exeter
PhD studentship: “Impacts of pre-Columbian human occupation in Central Amazonia”
This studentship will use a cross-disciplinary approach between Palaeoecology and Archaeology to investigate the influence of pre-columbian land use on the interfluvial areas of the Purus-Madeira Rivers in Central Amazonia. The student will conduct fieldwork to collect sediment cores from oxbow lakes, palaeorivers, and lagoons located nearby archaeological sites. Pollen and charcoal records will be produced from the sequences to reconstruct landscape-scale changes linked to historical land use. These data will complement current archaeological investigations in the Purus-Madeira region, to provide a complete picture of the scale of pre- Columbian human occupation in this interfluvial area.
